Travel Around Australia: How to Travel Cheaply in Australia

February 17, 2022

Australia’s territory is more than 700, 000 square kilometers, so travel takes longer. It’s a long journey. Given the distance, it is no wonder few travelers travel across the country because the terrain is too wide to cover in a quick trip. Generally, people travel throughout the country and stick to an area to visit.

This long-distance leads to very high transport costs and can make traveling through Australia difficult even when you have limited time. In the span of 14 days, a road trip around the Australian state is about 15882 km and is the main route of the country.

Are you planning to travel around Australia?

Road trips are a fun way to see the country. Planning a road trip is important, but don’t wait until everything is sorted out.

To tow or not tow?

To tow or not to tow? Pros and cons of towing a caravan or motorhome.

When towing is the best option? When to tow a caravan? When not to tow a caravan? Tow vehicle requirements? What to do if you get towed? Rental companies and availability? To tow or not to tow? That is the question.

In most cases, a towed boat will be released sooner than a nontowered boat.

There are certain circumstances where towing may be necessary, such as when there is a sunken boat in the water or when it’s too dangerous to try and reach the capsized vessel by other means.

When making the decision whether or not to tow, keep in mind your anchoring resources and how long it will take you to get those resources into place if needed.

Always follow safety guidelines when towing and avoid creating hazards for yourself or other boaters while doing so.

What to drive?

To travel around Australia cheaply, it is necessary to have a low range of gearing. It takes about 3-4 days to drive from Sydney to Perth.

The mistakes we made (that we made):

We started out thinking that the camper trailer would be great for a year, but we realized that we wanted something more comfortable.

We will happily get a caravan if it means having some more comfort and easier setup and packing down.

We got it wrong by starting out with the camper trailer and not taking into account our needs as travel companions.

Get Around Cheap by Backpacker Bus

Answer:

Get Around Cheap by Backpacker Bus is a great resource for backpackers and travelers. They have a free bus service running from the capital city to the airport. The service is available for a period of 24 hours.

Australia has a few backpacker buses still in operation.

These are great choices for younger backpackers looking to have fun, party, and hang out with other travelers.

Everything is organized for you so you just need to show up and be ready to have fun!

Magic Bus is a backpacker/party bus and is perfect for travelers looking to get rowdy.

Trips go from Perth north to Broome or east to Melbourne so you have to time your trip accordingly to line up with the set departure.

The itineraries are flexible, as they let riders vote on where to go and what to do, so every trip is unique. They try to keep a balance of 50% men and 50% women, as well as a balance of different nationalities, so there is always a diverse group.

Trips cost $250 AUD ($183 USD) per 1,000km so the price will depend on which route you take and how long your specific journey is.

For a similar (but more intimate) experience, check out Road2Adventure. It’s essentially a party hostel on wheels, with space for 8 people to live and travel. It’s like the Magic Bus but much smaller. They run cross-country trips on set schedules, making it a fun alternative if you don’t want to spend a month with 20+ other backpackers. Tours range from 12-19 days and cost 1,595-2,395 AUD per person.

For a more independent option, check out Share Bus. It’s not exactly a tour as you “share” the bus with 9 other travelers and run everything yourself. They show you how to use the equipment, arm with your maps and information, and send you on your way. It’s essentially a self-guided camping experience with new friends.

The backpacker bus provides cheap transportation for travelers.

The cost is between 333-835 AUD per person.

The backpacker bus operates in the southern half of the country (including Tasmania) from October to April and in the north from April to October.

Picking the right camper for us

Answer:

The type of camper you choose is going to depend on what you plan to use your camper for. For example, if you plan to use it for weekend getaways, you might want to go with a lighter-weight camper. If you plan to use it for longer trips, you might want to go with a heavier weight.

Camper trailers can be a great way to travel for the first time, but they’re not perfect.

It’s important to take the time to check out different models and meet with suppliers before making a purchase.

Hit a caravan or campervan show so you can get a feel for what you want and don’t have to worry about making a decision on the spot.

We picked up a camper trailer that opens then blows up with a press of a button rather than stuffing around with poles – a nice compromise between a caravan that can’t really go off-road and a tent, which isn’t so comfortable.

First, we needed to work out the car we needed, and purchase the right solar panels, lights, fridge, storage solutions, and more.

Next? Interrogate anyone who has done the trip.

Once on the road, don’t stop asking for tips: this is how we found secret free camps, owl hideaways, caves, and fishing spots.

And download Wik camps, this little app packs a punch with places to stay and things to do rated by travelers just like us.

We discovered so many adventures we would not have known existed like the Tin Can Man, that wasn’t in any guide books but sounded just crazy and high-rated enough to take a detour out of Geraldton (it turned out to be a huge shed filled with thousands of biscuit tins and a great back story)

Compromise

Answer:

When you are trying to make a decision, you can choose to make a compromise. Compromises are choices that are less than ideal but still acceptable. A compromise can be made when you have to choose between two options that are both bad, but one is better than the other.

Compromise is important for the attainment of goals. Doing a road trip requires compromising on some things. It feels good to not compromise on one’s dreams.

Fifth Wheel

Answer:

Fifth wheels are a type of caravan that resemble cars and can be towed by a car. Fifth wheels are popular in Australia but can be difficult to find parking or maneuver in cities.

Fifth wheels have lots of space inside and are large, but they also have all the necessary equipment to live comfortably.

They’re easy to tow but may be limited to where you can go and sites you can get into due to their size.

A new appreciation for nature

Answer:

A new appreciation for nature is the ability to appreciate nature on a deeper level. Sunsets can be enjoyed more easily when you’re outside and able to see the sun setting. Australia is a large country with many different regions that are worth exploring.

Traveling from south to north, you’ll transition from the waters off the southern coast, up through lush national parks including Flinders Ranges and the wine region of the Barossa Valley, before reaching the opal mining town of Cooper Pedy, where the residents live underground to beat the unbearable heat.

It is important to be aware that everything in Uluru and Alice Springs will cost more than average, due to the small monopoly of businesses.

Flying into and out of Alice Springs or Uluru is an option, but flights are expensive.

Trekking in Kings Canyon, Northern Territory is another great way to see natural beauty at a fraction of the cost of other activities in Australia.

A new appreciation for nature can be gained from visiting a park or hiking in the wilderness. Spending time outdoors can help relieve stress and improve moods.

Nature has therapeutic properties that are helpful in treating mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

By experiencing natural surroundings, people can gain a better understanding of the world around them and develop empathy for others.
