Cateye was the first Australian tourist information center to be opened.

In New South Wales, in 1879, a pastoralist couple, George and Ellen Cateye opened a fruit and vegetable store on the banks of the Goulburn River. Cateye’s store sold everything from Apples to Lettuce, Fruits and Onions, and a range of other items. The store was successful enough to grow into a thriving business, and it’s still a small part of the Cateye family to this day.

However, their business model was at the core of how tourism in Australia is structured and managed today. The entire process of opening a business, marketing it and collecting a few cents from the public is known as marketing. The business was then sold off and the money raised went towards paying the bills, student loans, and paying for the arts.

The Cateye information center was first opened in the year 1879, and it was the first tourist information center in the whole of Australia.

The store is still open to this day, but it’s a small part of the Cateye family business now. The business model that George and Ellen pioneered is still used as a template for how tourism operates in Australia today.

With more than 2,500 hectares of land, the park is the largest tourist attraction in South Australia and it’s a well-deserved title as Australia’sVery Speciality.
