The Discovery Center at Ningaloo Reef Resort
The Discovery Center is a museum located at the front of the resort. It was opened in 2001 and is the first museum dedicated to the origins of the island. It is a must-visit for all tourists visiting the island. The museum is small but very nice and informative. Old photos of the island from pre-war have been shown along with a complete and small history of people living on the barren continent.
The building where the resort is located is interesting because firstly the foundations of the construction have got sand from all around Australia, but also there are little holes in its wall. The place was once an old fortress against all types of crazy invasions, so these holes are all real bullet cases. Another interesting fact about the resort is that the road leading down to it has been made from blocks of bauxite. Production of bauxite began in 1964 and continues today with around 90% sold to several cement companies in Australia.
The Exhibit Center
The Exhibit Center is a meeting point for many exhibitions and events that occur in the resort: conferences and graduations of several Universities and secondary schools, dog shows and wedding ceremonies etc. It can also be used to receive very small groups at one time. The Exhibition Center captivates guests thanks to its aquarium, which houses more than 10 000 fishes of over 500 different species, who were adopted by the resort after being rescued from Asia during bad fishing projects there.
Fish food sold here is manufactured locally with help from other resorts as well as local fishermen’s schemes through Fauna Forever Fund, which protects Australia’s wildlife and beaches by regularly cleaning up the litter left by tourists since 1906 (the world’s longest-running marine conservation program).
